Applying Reimers and McGinn's "Informed Dialogue" to Namibia
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page paper applying the principles of "Informed Dialogue : Using Research to Shape Education Policy around the World" to formulating educational policy in Namibia. While reaching informed decisions and then implementing them is the ultimate goal of the process described by the authors, the interactions of those involved in the process are nearly as important as the outcome of their discussions and negotiations. Each aspect of the decision-making process is seen as being valuable not only to improving education and reducing its elitist components, but also in contributing to building a national goal in enhancing the lives of those who had been so flagrantly discriminated against in the colonial system. Comparing Spanish and US School System Structure
[ send me this paper ]
A 13 page paper listing and evaluating the similarities and differences between Spanish and US schools. Spanish students spend only slightly more days in class each year than do US students. Spain spends less per student and gives teachers less autonomy than in the US, yet Spain's overall literacy rate is greater than the US. Specialized training is less developed in Spain, and both nations have difficulties with dropout rates as teens move beyond the age of compulsory education. It appears that at least in the primary and secondary levels, Spain can provide lessons for the world. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Devising a Method for Researching TESOL in Japan
[ send me this paper ]
A 20 page paper addressing researching the state of English instruction in Japan. The Japanese are said to have greater difficulty in acquiring a working knowledge of English, but indications are that cultural issues may lead passive and active resistance to English acquisition. The purpose here is to devise a study of the effectiveness of Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) in Japan, keeping cultural considerations uppermost in the design of the study. The paper includes a literature review that discusses the cultural issues of imposing English on the Japanese, despite recommendations that English become Japan's second official language in 2002. Half of the paper is devoted to considerations for developing a survey instrument that will produce statistically significant and unbiased results. Bibliography lists 33 sources.
