Self-Evaluation: Method For School Improvement
[ send
me this paper ]
10 pages in length. The Office for Standards in Education
(OFSTED), considered to be the leading authority on school
evaluation, fully supports the notion of school
self-evaluation as a means by which to achieve academic
improvement. Clearly, there are myriad components of
school evaluation that cannot be effectively addressed
merely by utilizing outside sources; as such, school
self-evaluations – where teachers and administers
examine their own scholastic contributions – serve to
complement outside evaluations to such a degree that a
fully comprehensive evaluation is possible. The writer
discusses pros and cons of school self-evaluation, as well
as addresses necessary elements for its success.

Uniforms: A Utilitarian Answer to What Appears to be a
Complex Question.
[ send
me this paper ]
(11 pp) The issue of school uniforms in public school
remains a debated one. Those in favor of a uniform method
of dressing for school feel it aids in discipline and
student attitude. Those who are opposed to public school
uniforms are basing their decisions on an emotional
premise, which does not have much validity. This
discussion is in favor of implementing public school
uniforms (within our district.) Bibliography lists 10
sources.

[ send

School
Vouchers
[ send
me this paper ]
A 7 page paper discussing the issue of school vouchers,
particularly the lack of empirical evidence that voucher
systems truly have any beneficial effect on educational
outcomes. The paper also discusses the positions of George
W. Bush and Al Gore. Though their benefits may not be
empirically verifiable, the fact remains that vouchers and
other alternatives have the support of families using
them. Parental involvement is an ongoing problem for many
urban schools, and it may be that vouchers' primary
benefit could be that of enabling involved parents to take
an increased role in their children's education. It is
reasonable for the mainstream public school system to be
opposed to school choice, but it is also reasonable to
expect some alternatives to have highly positive results.

[ send

sources.

Vouchers: What If?
[ send
me this paper ]
A 13 page paper discussing the issue of school vouchers
and containing all the information of the 7 page paper of
similar name. This much longer version includes a section
speculating on the organization that would evolve in a
fully-functional voucher-oriented school. Additional
issues addressed in this version are: (1) how a true
voucher system would affect the teacher/administrator
relationship; (2) how teachers' and administrators' roles
in the urban community might change; and (3) how teachers'
and administrators' roles in the larger school system
would change. Points discussed include accountability for
both student achievement and financial resource use.

Schools
/ Urban vs. Suburban
[ send
me this paper ]
A 3 page argument in which the writer posits that the
reason many people are not satisfied with urban schools is
evidently resulting from the reasons that people are not
satisfied with urban areas in general. As Americans have
shifted so abruptly to the suburbs, the nation's cities
have been left to fall apart and so has everything in
them- including their schools. And when education is poor,
the remaining affluent pack up and leave the city as well;
creating a cycle of cause and effect. Now that there is so
little left in inner-cities, urban schools are not able to
offer the attractive services that suburban schools are.
Statistics and case examples are analyzed to support
points made. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Separation
of Church and State.
[ send
me this paper ]
(5 pp) It is essential that it be understood that
separation of church and state, also in the First
Amendment, is a means of protecting religious liberty by
assuring that the government does not improperly support
one religion over another or all religions over no
religions. Separation church and state is not a technical
concept, then, but one that goes deeply to the
safeguarding of liberty in this country. Bibliography
lists 4 sources.

Sex
Education in the Public Schools
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page discussion of the necessity of sex education in
the school system. Contends that due to the complexity of
modern society, sexual promiscuity is a fact of life for
many children and must be addressed. Concludes that since
the traditional mechanisms are not longer in place to
educate our children regarding the intricacies of sex this
role falls to the school system. Bibliography lists 3
sources.

Should
Kids With AIDS Be Allowed To Attend Public Schools?
[ send
me this paper ]
6 pages in length. In 1985, people in parts of the country
were approaching hysteria at the thought of children with
AIDS attending the same public schools with their own
children. Today, we know better than to think that the
disease can spread through casual contact. Many school
systems have put into place AIDS awareness and prevention
programs to which the AIDS-infected student can be a
valuable asset, and the affected children themselves need
the security and acceptance of routine and friendship. The
paper concludes that kids with AIDS certainly should be
allowed in the public schools, that their presence can
benefit all. Bibliography lists 17 sources. AIDS-kid.RTF

Funded Charter Schools
[ send
me this paper ]
11 pages. Charter schools are publicly funded schools run
by private individuals in order to give students a more
complete and rounded education. The premise of a charter
school is to lower the student to teacher ratio from what
the overcrowded public schools currently have, thus giving
children a chance at a more personalized and hopefully
more advantageous education. While this premise is sound
in theory, there are both advantages and disadvantages to
the system. This research paper presents an indepth look
at both sides of the charter school controversy. The
advantages as well as the disadvantages, and this allows
the reader to make his or her own decision as to whether
charter schools are living up to what they were intended
to be. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

“Hooked
on Phonics” -- A Product Designed to Take Teaching
Reading Back to Basics
[ send
me this paper ]
This 14 page report discusses the reading program
“Hooked on Phonics” that is used to help children in
learning to read and write. Proponents of the program
believe that it is vitally important to understand that a
great number of the children who appear to be unable to
understand a concept or a set of directions are actually
having problems recognizing actual words. As a result of
having to direct their focus so carefully and devote so
much attention to slowly and carefully figuring out the
words, they focus less attention on what the text means.
Children who recognize words more readily can focus more
attention on meaning. That recognition can be enhanced
through understanding the relationship that exists between
sounds and letters in an alphabetic code. Phonics then
establishes the basis for that process of decoding words.
Bibliography lists 9 sources.
