Is
Care in the Community Working?
[ send
me this paper ]
In 1990 in the United Kingdom the National Health
Service and Community Care Act 1990 laid out plans
to integrate individuals with learning disabilities
back into the community, even if they had been
institutionalised for many years. Further guidelines
were given five years later in "Signposts for
Success". The policy has been greeted with
mixed responses, and the results in some instances
have been controversial. This 5 page paper looks at
the current situation and discusses the concepts of
care and partnership in the care of those with
learning disabilities in relation to these two
aspects. The bibliography cites 4 sources.

J.Anthony
Lukas: Common Ground, A Turbulent Decade in the
Lives of Three American Families. (1985)
[ send
me this paper ]
(5pp) Common Ground: covering a great deal more than
its subtitle suggests, is a huge non-fiction study
of Boston in the 1970's, when it was under the
pressure of court-ordered busing to achieve school
desegregation. The three families J. Anthony Lukas
focuses on include only a handful of the hundreds of
people in a multilayered account of the moral fabric
of a city and the vastly different social universes
of its neighborhoods. Eventually the turmoil
surrounding the desegregation efforts is seen in the
context of history, not just national history, or
that of Boston, but the history of the little
villages cities are made up of, and in many cases
even the histories of individuals.

Kozol
and Kidder
[ send

A 5 page paper comparing the perspectives from which
these authors wrote their books, "Savage
Inequalities" and "Among
Schoolchildren." Kozol has some scathing words
for teachers, but he points his accusing finger at
school administrators and state legislators more
than he does teachers. Kidder tells the story of one
inner-city elementary teacher that takes a far more
positive approach. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

of America's Underprepared
[ send
me this paper ]
A 10 page exploratory essay based on Mike Rose's
book Lives on the Boundary that not only reflects
upon the information provided by Rose, but also
considers the controversies as they apply to the

that the decline in educational efficacy, especially
among racially diverse populations, is a result of
the social phenomenon of acceptability in being
average and the imbeddedness of grading and
valuations in the educational process. No additional
sources cited.

Away From Home: Adjusting to College Life
[ send
me this paper ]
A 7 page paper. While most freshmen are excited to
be going off to college for the first time and
experience being on their own, away from home and
away from the watchful eyes of their parents, many
don't realize the series of adjustments they are
going to have to make. Some of these changes are
more serious than others. Many students find the
first semester of college so disconcerting that they
drop out. This paper will cover some of the most
important adjustments that are made when attending
college for the first time, as well as some
solutions on how to deal with those changes.

Middle
Schools as Grounds for Prevention of Hate Crimes
[ send
me this paper ]
A 35 page proposal for researching whether middle
schools can be instrumental in reducing the
incidence of hate crimes in the community. Given the
greatly increased attention to violence and the
potential for violence within schools of all types,
the fact that this many in-school crimes can occur
is more than only disturbing. It also leads to
speculation of how much of the violent intent that
cannot be carried out in school spills out to the
surrounding community after school hours. This
overflow effect affects not only other students.
Once the violence leaves school grounds, all members
of the community are potential victims. Any
population groups belonging to any form of
"otherness" - differences in color,
religion, values or any other real or perceived
difference are at greater risk. The purpose here is
to investigate the ability of middle schools to
positively affect incidence of hate crimes in the
surrounding community. Bibliography lists 28
sources.

Place for Religious Prayer in Public Schools
[ send
me this paper ]
This 6 page report discusses the issue of school
prayer in America and makes the argument that there
is no place for school prayer in a public school.
From the time an American child is in the first or
second grade he/she has learned that “America is a
melting pot of people.” This means different
religions and beliefs as well as ethnicity. Apart
from the creative connotations children have made
from that phrase, they are indoctrinated with the
idea that one of the things that makes the United
States both more unique and stronger than other
countries is the fact that so many different people
of so many different backgrounds have contributed to
the ways in which America has evolved. Those
different viewpoints have ostensibly led to a
collective attitude of tolerance and respect.

Peer
Mediation
[ send
me this paper ]
12 pages in length. Discord among students is a
normal, daily event at all stages and types of
educational institutions, but it is the manner in
which such antagonism is addressed that varies from
school to school. A fairly new and acclaimed method
of dealing with student strife employs the very
students themselves. Peer mediation -- a method by
which students counsel one another in order to
overcome problems and conflicts -- is gaining
momentum within school districts across the country.
The writer discusses the various aspects of peer
mediation, as well as includes an interview with
students who currently take part in such a program.

Piaget
and Middle Cildhood.
[ send
me this paper ]
(5 pp). Jean Piaget wanted to understand how kids
think. His reasoning was that, if he observed
children's cognitive skills development carefully
some patterns would develop. Recording and being
aware of those patterns would then help him make
some decisions about how we think and accrue
knowledge as adults. This discussion will consider
Piaget's theories of development for middle
childhood. And for the sake of discussion we will
define the age of that child between 7 to 11. It
should be noted that humans, particularly children,
seldom fit in any given development category one
hundred percent of the time. Bibliography lists 5

Population
Changes: Affect Upon California's Latino Students
[ send
me this paper ]
9 pages in length. As a result of the changing
demography of Latino students within California's
school system, it has become apparent that other
changes have also taken place due to this shift in
population that adversely affect the academic needs
of the Chicano/Latino population at the elementary,
secondary and post secondary segments of the
educational pipeline. Humanity has been enduring an
ongoing battle for centuries: the strained relations
among the races. Despite efforts to put the past
behind, signs remain at nearly every juncture that
there still exists a strong sense of racial
dissension. While many Caucasians do not see the
problem being as severe as it is represented,
Latinos angrily reply that the lighter skinned race
has not had to endure such prejudice and, therefore,
cannot begin to identify with the situation.
Caucasian Americans do not interpret racism as a big
problem, therefore, they do not see a need for
government intervention. Similarly other United
States minorities believe they often receive unfair
treatment, as well, because of their race. However,
assimilation into the California school system
presents yet another obstacle for the growing Latino
population. The writer discusses issues of academic
interference, as well as addresses potential
solutions. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Possible
Lives / Mike Rose's Perspectives on the
Possibilities of the Young Mind
[ send
me this paper ]
This 5 page underscores the importance of Mike
Rose's perspectives on children and the future of
public education. It is Rose's assertion that
children, especially children of color in
impoverished communities, have had their
possibilities stunted by the conditions of their
upbringing and their exposure to underfunded public
schools. But Rose's arguments are hopeful, and he
views the opportunity for change and the possibility
for success as major elements in his almost
philosophical view of the current status of
education. No additional sources cited.

Preparing
Students for the Job Market
[ send
me this paper ]
(5 pp) Looking for work is a full time job in
itself, and not many people tell us that when we
begin the job search. Students who are entering the
job market must be aware of the job seeking process,
as well as have tools at their disposal to avoid
discouragement while they look for employment. Are
there ways which students can be better prepared for
this task? Our discussion will examine that
question. Thesis statement: SCANS skills should be
incorporated into multi-discipline lesson plans.

Proposal: Correlation between Poor Grades and
Aggressive Behavior in High School Students
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing a proposed investigation.
Aggression in high school students has been studied
from several different perspectives, but it appears
that there has been no attempt to relate grade
expectations with aggression levels. In light of the
increase in the incidence of violent events within
high schools, the possibility that grade performance
could have effect on the problem makes is worthy of
study. The paper provides a hypothesis to be tested,
a literature review, proposed methods and
anticipated limitations. Bibliography lists 5

Retention
Based on Standardized Testing in Elementary
Education: Test Anxiety, Aggression and Resistance
[ send
me this paper ]
This 30 page paper provides an overview of the
issues related to the use of standardized testing in
elementary education to determine grade retention
and the implications. This research study asserts
that the use of standardized testing, including the
Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) to determine
whether children go on to the next grade can create
considerable problems for children who are retained.
The use of this standardized testing can result in
test anxiety, displays of aggression and resistance
to standardized tests, and children that are
retained because of these tests suffer considerable
from a psychological and psychosocial perspective,
and the focus of school psychologists in reducing
the impact of standardized tests. Bibliography lists

Review
of "Not Half, Not Some"
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page paper reviewing an article appearing in Phi
Delta Kappan. Glasser's (1997) article holds much
wisdom for today's teachers faced with changes in
approaches to education. The wave of
multiculturalism in which little learning took place
but students came to know each other better has
largely passed, thankfully. Cultural issues do need
to be taken into account in any class, but the
entire focus of instruction does not need to revolve
around those issues. Bibliography lists 1 source.

School
And Community Relations
[ send
me this paper ]
A 10 page paper. There are two different
relationships an effective principle must establish
in terms of the school and the community. One is
between the school and the general community, or the
community at-large, and the other is between the
school and the home community, i.e., the parents of
students who attend the school. These are described
as is the recent reconceptualization of the
community as proposed by neoinstitutionalists. Ideas
for how an effective principal can involve the
communities and thereby establish good relations
with them are provided. Bibliography lists 7

Teaching
Diversity Awareness
[ send
me this paper ]
This 12 page report discusses the issues surrounding
the teaching of diversity awareness. The impact of
all diversity awareness programs is of fundamental
concern in virtually every aspect of the modern
world. Awareness of different races, different
physical abilities, different cultures is important
because they form the context of social interactions
and relationships. Clearly, part of any student’s
comprehensive education is the awareness of the
people around him or her and what makes their
perspective unique. There is no question that the
whole issue of social, educational, and workplace
diversity is a challenging and complex one for many
schools, school administrators, and teachers. Those
most successful in implementing an effective
diversity awareness program approach it not as a
bureaucratic mandate but as a broad-based social
imperative. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Concept of Education,' by Paulo Freire. Freire
illustrates how our education system, and that of

They are not taught to evolve with any level of
consciousness as human beings, and are controlled,
for the most part, by the system. In addition to
detailing Freire's essay, education in this country,
and in Hong Kong, is discussed as it relates to the
essay. No additional sources cited.

The
American Indian Minority Student.
[ send
me this paper ]
(36 pp). Although the motivating question for this
discussion was to examine those factors, which
motivate minority students, in choosing to look at
American Indian students, I was surprised that I
could not isolate "motivating factors" for
this minority group. It seemed illogical that any
given group would be too small for motivation. Then
I began to wonder if the idea of
"motivation" is in accurate. What if
motivation is a cultural assumption that does not
apply to this minority group? If that is true, than
a "western" definition of motivation would
be applied to a group of people, for whom the
concept was or is erroneous, and it would appear
that the group would be then doomed to fail, in
relationship to that definition. That is not to say
that certain individuals might be self-motivated, or
motivated by a relative. However as a group
generality, that did not seem to be the case. The
author continues to look at motivation in a cultural
light in reference to educational needs.

The
Environment of South Bronx Middle Schools
[ send
me this paper ]
An 11 page paper discussing what could, without the
dedication of parents and teachers, amount to a
picture of hopelessness in New York City's poorest
borough. Commonly touted as the poorest
congressional district in the nation where average
per capita income is just $8,000, the entire area
often is referred to as a 'war zone' where dropout
rates exceed 25 percent and the sound of
intermittent gunfire commands little notice. As the
South Bronx suffers more than any other portion of
the city's school districts, so do the area's middle
schools and their students bear the brunt of the
fiscal deficiencies of the city-wide school budget.
Elementary students are not yet of an age that they
feel the need to question life as they see it; high
school students already have eschewed the option of
dropping out. Middle school students are indeed
stuck in the middle, and are subjected to conditions
both at home and at school that can give them little
reason to strive for more than what they can see
around them. Bibliography lists 16 sources.

The
Problem Of Violence In Schools
[ send
me this paper ]
This 10 page research paper examines the problem of
violence among American youths with particular
relevance to its impact in schools. The writer
explores various causal factors of violent behavior
and several different types of programs being
implemented to prevent it. Included in the
discussion are programs that attempt to intervene
during early years and prevent the onset of violence
as well as those that come later on in the child's
development and seek to obstruct the entry of
weapons into schools. It is concluded that the
psychological implications of ignorance coupled with
violence's portrayal in the media and in everyday
life (domestic violence etc;) makes solving the
problem socio-politically difficult. Bibliography
